The person will be driving around some blocks for hours to find parking or double park. People should be able to parallel park in densely populated areas of L.A, San Francisco, San Diego, parts of OC. I see bus and truck drivers doing this daily. I agree texting or holding a phone while driving is much worse. I prefer pp sometimes to avoid door dings. Venice Beach, Santa Monica, all beach areas in SoCal unless you want to pay $10-15 to park for those pull-in lots. People should be able to parallel park in densely populated areas of L.A, San Francisco, San Diego, parts of OC or the person will be driving around some blocks for half-hour to find parking or double park. Tougher driving tests to get a license is important, but parallel parking is far down the list. And making sure driver's know the rules of the road and pay attention and how texting while driving is unacceptable is far more important. I think tougher handling controls in high traffic situations is far more important. I do not think parallel parking is an important part of a driver's test. I have never parallel parked and I have a perfect driving record and have had my license for almost 19 years. I’ve been driving for 40 years not being competent at parallel parking, and it’s been fine there’s no negative consequences except that sometimes I have to walk further. It’s really not the end of the world not to know how to do this. I would still drive around until I saw a big spot, or I would go to a pay lot, or I would let my passenger park for me. Again, I passed it on my test, but if I were in those areas in California and Florida I would still not be a confident parallel parker. Just because it’s not on the test doesn’t mean you can’t learn how to do it. It seems silly to require everyone in the state to pass some thing that’s limited to a very few areas.Īgain, no one said you shouldn’t learn it. Maybe it should be state dependent.Īnd none of those areas have pay parking lots? I don’t think having it state dependent is the answer, because in Florida there are probably many more out-of-state drivers parking in those areas, where as people who live in Jacksonville or Key West may never have to. Lightner's bill has been moved to the Committee on Transportation where it's unclear if it will make it to a vote.I can think of numerous popular areas that require parallel parking in California and Florida. The bill would still have parallel parking taught in driver training programs, but for adults who are able to skip earlier portions of the program, they wouldn't be exposed to those skills. Parallel parking is one exercise to test all four areas.ĬHECK OUT: Florida could legalize fully self-driving cars The test looks to see if a driver has a few key skills such as an understanding of how far the vehicle's front and rear end sticks out, and how to back up to the left and right side. She added the practice is "a money game" and parallel parking is "outdated" in today's society.Ī local driving school instructor countered her point and said parallel parking is an excellent way to know if a student driver has basic skills. Lightner said constituents complained of spending $50 per test only to fail and miss out on the actual driving portion. Those who fail the section do not move onto the on-road portion of the test.
